It's Rodeo Saturday night...

I took the boys to the rodeo that came to town...

The rodeo was great!!! We all left with cowboy hats!  Check out the video on youtube... This is the best bare back rider... actually, it was the best horse! He wanted to launch that cowboy to the moon!
www.youtube.com/mommycomedy

Ethan didn't like the roping even though I explained that they didn't hurt the calves... I tried to explain the history behind cowboys, but I don't think he was listening.  I didn't even touch the subject of how they got those horses and bulls to buck...

A little spring in this horsey's step!

All about the Lock Down...

Fourth school lock down in Albuquerque this week... they should have informed new residents ahead of time about "Run around school neighborhoods waving a gun week"... I'll mark it on the calendar so we are ready for it next year!

D-E-A-D...

Sean came home from school on Tuesday and was talking about how a classmates Daddy went to Jesus... I asked him what he was talking about and he was pretty sure that a girl in his class had a Daddy that went to live with Jesus...

As I asked more questions and tried to figure things out, I was pretty sure he probably knew what he was talking about... he was sure that this little girls Daddy was with Jesus and I as quite impressed with how well he understood 'going to live with Jesus'... except the fact that he felt that when Jesus fixed you you got to come back...  that's neither here nor there because he's three...

Anyway, I asked his teachers today if this little girls Daddy was D-E-A-D (the kids were around)... they looked at me puzzled...  so I explained Sean's story about how the Dad went to live with Jesus... luckily for the Dad, I don't need to send condolence cards because I am assured that he is very much alive!  The teachers went on to explain how good Sean is at story telling... such a talent!

Since then, he has told me that his teacher, Jennifer, is going to take the class to Texas in two weeks... I looked at him...

Really?!?  I guess I'll have to ask Ms. Jennifer about that...

He should be a writer...

Crazy Gun Guy in the neighborhood...

Ethan's school went on lock down this afternoon...scary showing up with the roads blocked off and about 75 different forms of police (regular, SWAT, hostage, etc) all over the place...someone phoned in a 'somebody has a gun' call from a house in the neighborhood and then hung up...no one was home when the police arrived so they locked everything down and searched the neighborhood...all the kids were safe!

Thank god for the quick reaction of law enforcement and the school officials!  They were locked down for over an hour and a half of having to remain quiet and still... all of the kids were so good!

Stickers, stickers everywhere...

Just caught Sean sticking a sticker on the window... told him 'no' so he tried to stick it on the entertainment center - 'no'... so he tried to stick it on the couch - 'no'... so he tried to stick it on the coffee table - 'no'... funny thing is, if I wasn't sitting right here there would be stickers covering everything!!!

My little actors?

Took the boys to an In Plain Sight casting call... apparently it was 'Opposite Day' and the boys didn't tell me... I thought they would screw around and not be interested... instead, Ethan grabbed his number and marched up to get his picture taken... then Sean grabbed his number and flashed a huge smile... they took notice of the two kids that were really into 'acting' incredibly interested in acting...

It's not elephant butt...

No fish to hook...

On our way out of Truth or Consequences...

We drove by Ralph Edwards fish pond... we felt that there were quite a few rules...

for a fish pond that was all dried up...

Not Icelandic hot springs...

We headed down south on I-25 today... we stopped and had a great lunch at this little restaurant.  We checked out the hot springs at Truth or Circumstances (It's really Consequences).  Turns out they weren't the Icelandic hot springs that we were imagining...

Instead, they were tubs of hot water and not just a hole in the ground that had hot water in it... we felt that it was a bit deceiving the way that they market it towards tourists...

Uncle Mike found the suspicious piping next to the teepee in the front yard of the hot springs 'resort'... he used some technical science talk that basically meant that they were pumping up hot water from a hot spring that was underground...

If you really wanted to, you could rent one third of a trailer and get a discount on bathing in the hot springs tubs... apparently, people think this is a good idea because it was hard to find a parking spot... we resisted the temtpation...

Calling all extras...

Had the opportunity to be an extra in the movie 'Passion Play' with Megan Fox, Mickey Rourke and Bill Murray... it was a long day.  I made some fun contacts and had a good time.
Didn't even recognize Bill Murray... it's been a while since Ghostbusters!

There's a hole...

Uncle Mike decided that he didn't have enough to do today... so he grabbed a shovel and decided to dig a hole in the backyard!  It's sand so it didn't take that long to dig a pretty good hole!

The boys had lots of fun helping Uncle Mike dig out a perfectly square hole!  They had fun!

A different kind of Man Cave...

The other day at Tent Rock we ran into a family with a 4 year old... they had suggested checking out the 'Man Cave'.  Uncle Mike and I though it would be cool to check it out...

We went to check out the 'Man Cave' in Cibola National Forest today... we ended up on an ice covered dirt road in a secluded tiny valley in between mountains with signs plastered everywhere 'Who Killed Carla?'  Insert scary random truck that just didnt fit... almost got stuck on ice turning around in the road... slid 30 feet trying to stop so Uncle Mike could read about 'Carla'... we all unanimously voted to wait until JD could go to check out the 'Man Cave'.

While sliding down the ice covered road, we did happen to look up and see the cat walk and spiral staircase up to the cave opening... it looked really cool and a bit isolated and creepy... when we got home we jumped online to check out what happened to Carla... she was murdered in the Man Cave parking area over a decade ago... it was all a bit sobering...

I'd like to go back and check out the Cave, but I'll wait until the snow and ice melt and it's a warm, sunny day!

Detour on the way home...

After checking out Santa Fe, we started the trip home (only about 45 minutes)...

On the way, we noticed a sign that advertised a Lake... we had to stop and check out the lake in the desert! We pulled off the highway and started a beautiful drive towards this lake...

We drove onto a Reservation and through a Moose Crossing (didn't see a moose though)... It was at this point that I realized that my camera battery had died!

We checked out the lake - it was closed... and on the way back to the highway we saw a sign for Tent Rock National Monument... We only had a half an hour to check it out, but it really made me wish my camera was working! This place is incredible! There are rock formation that look like teepees with rocks balancing on top of them... amazing! We'll have to go back and check it out when my camera is working!

We made it out of the park just in time... the sign said they'd lock us in... back to the highway (still no moose sightings) and towards home...

What a great day!

A woodworking marvel...

Uncle Mike was so excited to check out Loretto Chapel... I honestly had never heard of it before... apparently, a long time ago the congregation here needed a staircase built to its choir loft. A man showed up and said he would build it... he built this spiral staircase with no center support and no nails or screws of any kind. Before they could pay him, the man disappeared and no one knew his name or where he was from...

The chapel itself is gorgeous and the stair case is amazing!

Sean was very disappointed that he could not climb up the stair case... for obvious preservation reasons, they don't allow visitors to climb up the stairs.
Knowing that we were going to check this out and knowing that it was a Catholic chapel, I gave Great Grandma Dennis a call to see if she knew about it... Come to find out, Grandpa and she had visited there when they were travelling the West along time ago... so, while we were at the Chapel, Ethan lit a candle in memory of Grandpa Dennis...
Uncle Mike lit a candle in hopes that one of us would win the HGtv Dream Home 2010...

To Santa Fe...

We took the Turquoise Trail up to Santa Fe today... What a beautiful drive!

We had some great food at a place on the Plaza for lunch and took in some of the sights...

Annoying!

Uncle Mike took the boys up to start getting bath water ready... I came up a few minutes later and Sean was really upset. Actually, he was more like irritated and ticked off... I asked him what was wrong?

"Uncle Mike is annoying!!!"

Really?!? Pretty bad when a three year old says that you are annoying!

DOWN... Down... down...

Here are some pictures of the ride down... absolutely breath taking (especially if you are experiencing a bit of anxiety!)

There we are... the tram looks a bit rickety in shadow form!

There are some really neat looking rocks...

The view from the bottom up...
All done... safe and sound back at 5,000 feet above sea level!

Emergency at the top...

The view off of the top is amazing! These are pictures off of the viewing deck up by the restaurant. There's the High Finance restaurant at the top that caters to skiers and tourists... the tram is the only way up and the only way down at this part of the mountain! I guess when it's windy, the restaurant doesn't open?!?

This is the view straight down from the deck! Ethan about gave me a heart attack... at the top of the mountain it is covered in snow. At the end of the deck, it is 'au natural' meaning that there aren't any railings or retaining walls... a trail head starts there that runs the ridgeline. Well, Ethan decided to take a flying leap off of the deck and into the snow... this wouldn't have normally been a problem, but if he was two feet to the left, he would have been rolling off of the Sandias!!!
Needless to say, after that I had a death grip on both boys! I was ready to get back down to the truck... safe and sound!

If you look closely, you can see the death grip that I have on the boys!

This is the view off of the East side of the mountain where the ski resort is...

World's longest tram ride...

The tram that goes from the base of the Sandias up to Sandia Peak is the world's longest tram. It takes 15 minutes to get to the top... I didn't realize how far up that Peak really is! We went over some very deap crevices to get up there... I was praying the entire ride to the top!

Ethan and Sean were unscathed by the ride up the mountain in the little tram car...

I was praying that I would be able to upload the pictures later that day rather than have some search and rescue team find my SD card lodged in my broken camera and then use the pictures and momentos of the greatest tragedy that this tram had ever seen...

This was one of the towers that we went over to get up and down the mountain. We swayed a bit as we rolled off of the towers...

Uncle Mike looks just as crazy as ever... they don't close this tram down until the wind gusts hit 45 mph! I can't believe riding on this in wind over 5 mph!

It's a... Roadrunner!

Uncle Mike was watching TV when all of a sudden he started yelling that we needed to come look out the window... when we didn't move fast enough, he yelled louder.

By the time we got over to the window, the Roadrunner was headed towards the back wall... they are quick birds! I was suprised at how big they are! Definitely really neat to see...

My mom called me later in the afternoon and she started freaking out on the phone... she had apparently saw a Bald Eagle that flew by... I interrupted her with my Roadrunner story...

I think it's a toss up as to which one of us thought we were seeing the better of the two birds... Hopefully Roadrunners won't be strangers and we'll get to see lots more while we live here!

Found our Pediatrician...

Poor Sean ran a fever again last night... I decided this morning that I was going to give the Pediatrician a call and see if we could get in. Luckily, they had an opening. The doctor was a really nice guy and after checking Sean, decided to test him for Strep.

It turned out that Sean was positive for Strep... that makes him the 3rd member of our family to have Strep since we moved here in November! When the nurse came in and told us, I mentioned to her that I should probably go get tested because I have had a sore throat for quite a while... she surprised me when she offered to test me right there... wow! She swabbed me and then we waited for the results.

A few minutes later, the doctor came in... I asked him for general practice doctor recommendations and he was more that willing to give me a couple. The nurse came back in shortly after and asked if we wanted to guess what my results were... positive! I looked at the doctor and said that it looks like I'm going to be calling the general practitioner... he said not to worry about it that he would write me a script!

Amazing! I took Sean to the Pediatrician and we both came out with prescriptions! Looks like we've found our Pediatrician!

Where are we?!?

We went hiking in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains on the Sandia Pueblo this afternoon... It was supposed to be a mile loop that would dump us out back at the truck... nope, didn't happen that way... I was the dummy that told the gate guy that we didn't need a map! We walked around aimlessly for a while until I saw an older lady with her little dog... she didn't have a map, but she was familiar with the area...

She offered to drive one of us around to find our truck... against my better judgement (and because it was getting close to dusk and we knew they locked the gates by 7) I climbed into her prius with Sean and Uncle Mike and Ethan waited for us with Max. Ten minutes later, I was pulling up to Ethan and Mike (after following her back around to them) safe and sound! Thank God!

Tip for the day: If a gate guy offers you a map, you take the map!

Take me out to the desert...

We headed outside of town and found a one lane dirt road into the desert equivalent of a field in order to shoot off some model rockets... Uncle Mike set up the boys' Christmas present (a model rocket) and got it ready to shoot off. It was windy, but Uncle Mike was certain that he had correctly compensated... 3 - 2 - 1... Blast off! Oops, where'd it go?!? Didn't see it at all... then all of a sudden we saw some paper floating through the sky... no rocket in sight! One.

The boys were pretty upset that their rocket was orbiting Earth (that's what we told them)... we punched in Hobby Lobby to the GPS and started off... we turned onto paved roads and ended up circling around to yet another one lane dirt road. Well, if Tom-Tom says to go straight, then we go straight... we followed the dirt lane over hills and rocks until we made it to the paved road and took a right... We picked up two more rockets and some engines and headed back out...

This time we went north of town... found us another dirt road and followed it to a clear high point... Uncle Mike (again) thought he had the angle just right and loaded Sean's (new) rocket on the stand... 3 - 2 - 1... Blast Off! Success! We saw it go up and watched the parachute eject. That was cool! We watched it float down waaaaaayyyyy out in front of us... Uncle Mike started running and I jumped in the truck... By the time we got there it had landed and we didn't know where to start looking. I looked at Uncle Mike and told him that it was necessary to 'look' for the rocket. We gave up about ten minutes later and explained that losing rockets is necessary in order to learn how to shoot them. Two.

For some reason, we (Mike and I as the boys were ready to go home) decided we needed to try again. Against Ethan's better judgement, we loaded his rocket on the launch pad... this time Uncle Mike shot it straight up and made no adjustment for the wind... 3 - 2 - 1... Blast Off!!! Success!!! Straight up it went... it floated gently about 150 yards away and landed in Uncle Mike's hand! That was awesome! Third times a win!

We launched it two more times until we decided to take a break at a nearby park... the boys were pretty happy even though we lost the first two rockets. Today was fun and tomorrow is school...

Delayed...

Uncle Mike has called twice now to let us know that his plane is delayed... his 9:30 p.m. arrival has now turned into 11:30 p.m.!!! Looks like the boys aren't going to be making it to school tomorrow... this is not cool!

Excuse me, attitude...

JD headed out to a class... the moment after he walked out the door, the boys were fighting over the Wii. Ethan had the controller that Sean wanted and Ethan was ignoring Sean's poor attempts to ask politely. I decided to interject as I did not want to listen to the two of them anymore... I asked Ethan to please give Sean the controller...

Without moving another muscle, Ethan very deliberately raised his finger and pointed it at me as if to say, "Mother, please. I am five years old and deserve some respect. Respect my space and respect the symbol that this finger represents. Respect that I don't want to give Sean the controller right now and I do not want to open my mouth and discuss this with you right now. Respect that when I lower my finger I am showing you that I am now ready to proceed with a mature, five year old conversation."

Without wasting another word or losing my cool, I told him "Give your brother the controller or you are going to take a nap."

Without wasting another moment, Ethan handed Sean the controller.

Now that's what I call a win for the Mom Team...
